Aims and Objectives of the Plenary Summaries and the workshop rounds

Diversity Strategies for SMEs – Opportunities and Challenges

The aim of the opening plenary is to set the background context for the conference by outlining the key benefits of workplace diversity for SMEs, and the challenges they face in realising these opportunities.

Dr Paul Campayne will present a review of current literature and thinking that outlines the potential role and significance of SMEs in furthering anti-discrimination and social cohesion in Europe through embracing diversity in the workplace, the key business benefits that they can accrue by so doing, the challenges they face along the way, and a few examples of good practices.

Dr Peter Garside will move the discussion further on by presenting the findings of his empirical study into the business case for diversity as it applies to SMEs, with particular reference to a sample of firms in the UK. His presentation will highlight good practices in relation to the promotion of diversity and empowerment within organisations, business and staffing processes. It demonstrates the drivers behind this approach, the importance of the commitment of the entrepreneur business owner/manager and the challenges that SMEs face. Peter draws out lessons for “intermediary organisations and government agencies” in encouraging SMEs to embrace diversity.
